Abstract

Abstract In 1971, more than 50 years ago, the anthology Texte und Varianten was published by C. H. Beck in Munich. Gunter Martens, who edited the volume together with the Swiss philologist Hans Zeller, recalls in this article the background to the preparation of this historical monument of scholarly editing. With quotations from the minutes of two colloquia, organized by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Bad Godesberg in October 1967 and in Marbach am Neckar in May 1968, and excerpts from letters of the two editors, the article documents the reasons that led to the anthology.
