Abstract

This chapter discusses word processing. The phrase word processor is used in two different contexts, namely, hardware and software. Word processing is the electronic manipulation of words to construct documents. Document refers to any printed material, such as letters, contracts, and reports. It requires special software, which is sometimes referred to as a word processor or word processing package. Word processing software is available for all types of computers, so there is no special hardware required. However, sometimes the computers that are dedicated to the task of word processing are called word processors. They have special keys and other functions that make them easier to use with word processing software. Report preparation is the most visible and time-saving use of word processing. The user should take time to learn the capabilities of the word processor and then study the report format that is desired. With some careful planning, the time required for report preparation can be reduced significantly.
