Abstract

This chapter explores the terrain of subversive possibility that could override the imperative and pervasive neoliberal self(ie) gaze on social media. It theorizes a practice called “vigilant eco-love” that can function as an alternative to the neoliberal self(ie) gaze and as a promising and subversive mode of living and loving in a neoliberal, patriarchal, digital, racist, and capitalist age. There are three core practices of vigilant eco-love discussed in this chapter: be vigilant in our love, be mindful of the well-being of the ecology and the self as part of the ecology, and work toward an end to systemic oppression. Sahar Pirzada and her Twitter activism become a site to think with in theorizing what else might be possible. This chapter also charts three practical questions that people should ask themselves before posting on social media so they can evade the neoliberal self(ie) gaze.
