Abstract

‘Travelling on a light beam’ introduces Einstein's theory of special relativity. Einstein realized that the speed of light is independent of the source and the receiver. Both time and distance are relative to motion, and the contraction of length correlates precisely with the dilation of time, making the speed of light a constant. The fact that c (the speed of light) is finite makes the structure of space and time depend upon our speed. From this, Minkowski developed the idea of a single four-dimensional space-time. At this juncture, the effects of gravity had not yet been accounted for in the theory.
