Abstract

The effect is shown on various operational characteristics of vapour diffusion pumps when Perfluoro Polyethers are used. Such characteristics as the residual atmosphere directly above a normal baffled and a liquid nitrogen trapped vapour diffusion pump are presented. Further the change in performance of the vapour diffusion pump with wide variations in heater input is discussed. The effect on the boiling characteristics of a vapour diffusion pump, in terms of vibration, when using Perfluoro Polyether compared to other pump oils, is reviewed. The use of different grades of Perfluoro Polyether in mechanical rotary pumps is discussed with particular emphasis on their performance relative to the normal hydrocarbon oils. The characteristics of vacuum greases formed from Perfluoro Polyether are given.
