Abstract

In this chapter we will focus on polyolefin fiber and film applications in industrial and medical applications. Hence, polyolefin fiber forms and properties are reviewed to map out these technical applications that utilize polyolefin properties advantageously. Brief conversion techniques from the polyolefin fibers to technical fibrous structures such as yarns, ropes cordages, woven, knitted fabrics, nonwoven and their composites are discussed with reference to typical equipment, processes and structural properties. Industrial applications of the fibrous structures derived from the polyolefin fibers and yarns in medical, filtration, transportation, nets and ropes are also discussed. The polyolefins have a strong growth potential in certain industrial applications by adopting the emerging nanotechnologies to improve performance properties and cost factor over competing rival thermoplastic fibers.
