Abstract

The interactions of a material with its environment, gas or liquid, occur on the surface. Understanding the relationships between structure, chemical composition and reactivity of solid surfaces is a major issue both from the fundamental and application points of view. One of the best protections against corrosion for metallic materials is provided by passive layers, and passivation is therefore a central theme in the field of corrosion. This chapter deals with these two aspects. The first part is devoted to the structure and reactivity of surfaces and the second part deals with metal and alloy passivation.
