Abstract

This chapter summarizes a dispute settlement system that can handle the extant and prospective vicissitudes of outer space activities. It gives a short overview of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) techniques and discusses the so-called Dispute Resolution Movement. The primary methods of dispute resolution are adjudication, arbitration, mediation, conciliation and negotiation. The chapter proposes an adapted multi-door courthouse (MDC) system for the resolution of disputes relating to activities in outer space. It examines why the multi-door courthouse system is the most workable and viable dispute settlement mechanism for disputes relating to outer space. There are certainly some issues relating to the MDC System that will have to be dealt with in the establishment of this system as the dispute settlement framework for activities in outer space. Keywords: alternative dispute resolution (ADR); dispute resolution movement; multi-door courthouse (MDC); outer space activities; viable dispute settlement mechanism
