Abstract

5HT is taken up by rat-brain slices by a mechanism showing all the characteristics of active transport. The uptake is inhibited by tryptamine and to a lesser extent by dopamine, but noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptophan are not effective inhibitors. Imipramine, desmethylimipramine, cocaine and chlorpromazine inhibit 5HT uptake. Reserpine does not inhibit the transpor of 5HT into the cells, but reduces their binding capacity for the amine.
