Abstract

In order to realize stable soliton transmission in fiber chain with normal and abnormal dispersion fiber segments, the dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) in the experiment was properly allocated through the numerical analysis. The optical chain employing dispersion allocating technique was used to transmit 5 Gbit/s, 42 km optical soliton. The experiment showed that soliton can be transmitted in the fiber chain with normal dispersion fiber, so that the quality requirement to DSF was reduced, which will be favorable to the application of soliton communication. The numerical analysis showed the energy required to transmit fundamental soliton in dispersion allocated fibers would be larger than that in the equivalent uniform fiber with equal path-average dispersion. Thus the optical pulse will have higher power to improve S/N.
