Abstract

Enteral feeding is indicated in patients who cannot ingest adequate amounts of calories but have sufficient gastrointestinal function to allow digestion and absorption of feeding solutions delivered into the gastrointestinal tract via an enteral feeding device. Postoperative inappetence is especially common in cats with maxillofacial trauma or surgical procedures involving the nasal cavity, and these patients greatly benefit from enteral nutritional support. Delivery may be by nasoesophageal tube, esophagostomy tube, or gastrostomy tube. Each patient’s caloric needs should be calculated in order to determine the amount required to provide adequate nutrition.
