Abstract

We take up three interrelated topics in this chapter. The first is bank operations, or how banks survive and perhaps prosper in their peculiar line of business. The second is bank regulation, or how the laws and regulatory authorities shape and limit banks in their pursuit of profits. The third topic, market structure, has to do with the degree of competition in the banking business.
