Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview on the application of nanomaterials in alkali-activated materials. During the last decades alkali-activated materials have gained great attention as a promising alternative to Portland cement, which is associated with the great primary resources and energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emission. The utilization of nanomaterials brings further improvement concerning various aspects including setting behavior, microstructure, mechanical properties, physical properties, and durability. The advantages and disadvantages of applying nanomaterials are assessed, and the health related issues on applying nanomaterials are discussed. The effects of different types of nanomaterials, including nanosilica, nano-TiO2, nanoclay, and nanocarbon tube, on the performance of alkali-activated materials and their optimal dosage are summarized. Moreover, future research directions are recommended.
