Abstract

Dentures are one of the oldest dental devices used to replace the missing teeth. Various materials have been employed as denture base; among those, acrylic materials have gained popularity due to their desirable properties. However, an ideal denture base material is yet to come. This chapter aims to provide the dental professions, graduates, and students with basic and practical information on the currently used and developing denture base materials. This chapter includes the required properties of denture base materials, acrylic denture base materials as the material of choice, as well as modified acrylic denture base materials. In addition, it deals with the composition and clinical indications of denture lining materials, hard and soft relining, and tissue conditioner. Finally, the composition and properties of acrylic artificial teeth and newly developed alternative denture base materials will be explored and compared with conventional ones.
