Abstract

We explored the relationship between childhood adversity (CA; eg, abuse, neglect, and parental death) and metabolic outcomes in patients with mental illness. In addition to negatively affecting physical health, CA is strongly associated with the development of mental health disorders, which are linked to poorer health behaviors and the need for psychotropic medications, both of which can negatively affect metabolism. However, we hypothesized that CA is an independent risk factor for the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with mental illness, because CA places them at risk for mental health disorders and psychotropic medication use.
