Abstract

[207511-18-0] C6H7NO2 (MW 125.13) InChI = 1S/C6H7NO2/c1-9-6-2-4-7(8)5-3-6/h2-5H,1H3 InChIKey = BOFAIBPJCWFJFT-UHFFFAOYSA-N (reagent used as building block for the synthesis of functionalized 4-methoxypyridines; used as ligand and oxygen atom transfer) Alternate Names: 4-methoxypyridine 1-oxide; 4-methoxypyridine oxide; p-methoxypyridine N-oxide; pyridine, 4-methoxy-1-oxide; MEPO; MPO; MPNO. Physical Data: mp 82–85 °C, crystalline (light brown). Solubility: soluble in most common organic solvents. Form Supplied in: light brown crystal form; widely available. Preparative Methods: An efficient method for the preparation of 4-methoxypyridine N-oxide is the oxidation of 4-methoxypyridine with peroxides (eq 1). Typically, 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide can be used in refluxing acetic acid1 or in the presence of MeReO3 in dichloromethane at ambient temperature.2 (1) Handling, Storage, and Precautions: 4-methoxypyridine N-oxide can cause eye, skin, and respiratory system irritation. Manipulate with caution under a fume hood. Hygroscopic; storage in tightly closed container, in a dry and well-ventilated place. Routine safety precautions should be employed.
