Abstract

Gastroschisis is an anterior abdominal wall malformation that occurs in utero. Controversy exists in regards to the appropriate timing and mode of delivery. In New Mexico, all deliveries of prenatally diagnosed gastrochisis take place in two tertiary care hospitals-the University of New Mexico Hospital or Presbyterian Hospital. The protocol at UNMH has been a term vaginal delivery of all babies with gastrochisis, with cesarean section reserved for obstetrical indications. However, at Presbyterian, the protocol has been an elective cesarean section at 36 weeks after confirmation of lung maturity.
