Abstract

Objective: To investigate and analyze the prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients with isolated hypertension in China. Methods: We have carried out the HOT-China study from Apr. 2001 to Feb. 2002. This was a registration study in which 54590 hypertensive subjects were enrolled in the mainland China. The major results have been published earlier. We did this post-hoc analysis on the clinical characteristics of patients with isolated hypertension based on the database of the study. Results: The prevalence of isolated hypertension is 10.2% in this group.65.9% of ISH group were elderly people (≥65 years old).Baseline blood pressure was 160.14 ± 13.45/79.87 ± 5.72mmHg.SBP decreased 27.11 ± 14.25mmHg,DBP decreased 4.44 ± 7.03mmHg, and PP decreased 22.65 ± 15.05mmHg after treatment. The degree of lowering blood pressure increased with the level of hypertension. The control rate of ISH subgroup was 74.08%,which was lower than all the patients (79.2%). Multiple regression analysis indicated that control rate of ISH was positively correlated with age, while negative correlated with blood pressure level and plasma fasting blood glucose .It is not related to sex, waist circumference,BMI,clinic conditions, metabolic syndrome, course of hypertension or renal function. The proportion of patients whose DBP< 70mmHg increased from 2.99% at baseline to 9.47% after treatment. Compared with patients whose DBP≥70mmHg after treatment, the patients with lower DBP were older (71.39 ± 9.18 vs. 67.1 ± 11.22),with lower BMI (23.19 ± 3.83 vs. 23.59 ± 3.40) and more patients with grade 2 hypertension (49.46% vs. 43.86%). Conclusions: Combination treatment based on dihydropyridine calcium antagonists is effective and safe for ISH patients in China.
