Abstract

The disulphide of N-mercaptomethylpolyhexamethyleneadipamide has a structure similar to that accepted for keratin in that the -CH2SSCH2-group forms a bridge between long-chain polyamide molecules. The reactions of this disulphide have been investigated with particular emphasis on the use of reagents which react with the disulphide cross-linkage of keratin, e.g., peracetic acid, permanganate in acid and alkaline solution, chlorine dioxide, bromine, hypochlorous acid, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, thioglycollic acid and potassium cyanide. The precise nature of these reactions has been determined by analysing the products formed for total sulphur, disulphide sulphur and sulphonic acidsulphur, by determining the O : S ratio in oxidative reactions, and by infrared absorption spectroscopy. These reactions have shed light on the following aspects of wool chemistry. It is considered that the failure of oxidized wool to undergo exchange of protons by potassium ions is not inconsistent with the wool conta...
