Abstract
Abstract40 inch TFT‐LCD with a resolution of 1280×768 has been developed for HDTV application. This 40 inch LCD‐TV demonstrated two important breakthrough points in TFT‐LCD technology; First, it demonstrated that larger than 40 inch TFT‐LCD is not a size limit with current TFT‐ LCD processing technology. Second, it demonstrated that current LCD technical hurdles for TV application are resolved in the area of LC response time for motion picture, screen brightness and color reproduction and wide viewing angle performance. This panel features 12 msec inter‐gray response time, fast enough to fully support moving pictures without smear or other motion artifacts. In addition, 500 nits brightness, 76% color gamut with a novel wide viewing angle technology satisfy true digital TV performance. In this paper, we present the fabrication and characteristics of the panels. Also we compare the performance of this LCD‐TV with that of PDP.
