Abstract
Alleviation of pain and suffering is a humanitarian responsibility informed by tenets of ethics and evidence-based practice, thus calling for prevention and treatment strategies. Opioid analgesics used to treat pain require vigilance, however, respective of the immediate risks associated with their administration. Similar to a proactive and preventive approach to pain, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a method through which the high risk process of opiate delivery via patient controlled analgesia (PCA) may become safer.
