Abstract
The RO plant at Ras Abu Jarjur has been successfully operating since October 1984. The two year operation and maintenance contract was performed by a Consortium of Sasakura Engineering Company Ltd., and Sumitomo Corporation with the Ministry of Works, Power and Water, Bahrain. The Consulting Engineer is SWECO, Sweden.During these two years, organizing and training of the Ministry's plant personnel have been carried out. The plant is now operated and maintained fully by the Ministry. This paper outlines the two year operational experience of the plant. The results, including the Performance Test at the end of the two years, are presented. The biological problems and the methods used for sterilization of filters and membranes for the control of excessive bacteria growth together with initial problems with algae formation are discussed more in detail. The permeate flow and salt rejection performance characteristics of Du Pont B10 seawater membranes have been confirmed based on normalized operating data analysed using the computerised analytical technique established by Du Pont. The membrane fouling during the second year of operation, probably due to biological problems, was also clearly indicated by this operation control technique.
