Abstract

Anemia is a common condition in older adults and is associated with adverse outcomes, making it a significant health problem. The pathophysiology of anemia in older adults differs from younger adults as a result of aging related physiological changes, and therefore there are special diagnostic and therapeutic considerations when evaluating and treating an older adult with anemia. As the population of the United States continues to age, primary care physicians will increasingly encounter anemia in older adults, and an understanding of the unique etiologies, pathophysiology, workup, and treatment of anemia in older adults will be an important part of primary care.
