Abstract

Background: seroma occur in approximately % of patients with breast cancer undergoing mastectomy. Quilting suture has shown antiseroma activity in early studies. Methods: in this randomized phase 3 trial conducted in 6 French hospitals, we randomly assigned women with invasive breast cancer necessitating a radical mastectomy to undergo either conventional closure technique or quilting suture of the dead space in a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was seroma requiring either aspiration or surgical intervention (Grade 2 or 3 seroma) within 21 days following mastectomy.
