Abstract

Stephen Heller (1813-1888) is one of the talented piano music performing artists and composers of the 19th century. His delicate and talented short pieces have been dragged the attention of many famous musicians of his time. The purpose of this study is to generate interest in Stephen Heller’s piano music through an investigation of the Opus.45、46、47、125. This document consists of three chapters. Chapter I provides a brief overview of Stephen Heller’s life and the background of his music. Chapter II provides the pedagogical research and analysis on his Opus.45、46、47、125, and illustrate the piano techniques of Stephen Heller’s character into fifteen as scale、arpeggio、chromatic scale、crossing hands、double stop、pedal tone、grace note、one-note repetitions、suspension、syncopation、chords、broken chord、rhythmic、triplet、others. Chapter III contains a summary and conclusions. The works of Stephen Heller should be continued to be introduced to the contemporary piano teachers and students of all levels. Instead of the mechanical skill that general etudes can only provide, the tranquility and colorfulness in his music bring the joy of playing as well as the above technical training.
