Abstract
Certain principles will help cataract surgeons decrease their medicolegal risk. These principles include a thorough informed consent discussion before surgery and accurate and contemporaneous documentation. Safety protocols for intraocular lens implantation (IOL) can help reduce IOL errors, a major source of litigation. Problems can arise from inattentive postoperative care, so ophthalmologists should train staff members on handling patient communication and appropriate documentation of phone calls. When complications arise, surgeons should adhere to best practices and refer patients appropriately. Legal advice may be required when considering certain types of financial arrangements, and surgeons should follow guidelines for billing noncovered services carefully.
