Abstract

Burns are time-sensitive injuries associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Delays in treatment can lead to prolonged hospital stays, unnecessary transfers, increased mortality, and added costs. In 2019, an effort to improve statewide burn care led by the Louisiana burn centers’ medical directors collaborating with emergency physicians and the Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN), established statewide out-of-hospital care guidelines as well as routing guidelines based on criteria from the American Burn Association Burn (ABA).
