Abstract

Living root activity of water uptake manner was visualized by the neutron beam. To analyze the spatial root image and water distribution, we performed computer-assisted tomography. A soybean seedling was grown in an aluminum container and irradiated with thermal neutrons. Through image analysis, the water deficient part near the root was found to be shifted downward along with a root development, suggesting the relationship with main and side root activities. When the water kinetics in the vicinity of the root was measured, 3 phases were appeared during the root growth. During the water decreasing phases, there was one in which the water amount near the root was temporarily increased. Since the microscopic research of water movement around the root is not well studied, neutron radiography is expected to provide extremely important information for studying plant activity.
