Abstract

Guidelines from the Royal College of Anaesthetists for pediatric training have listed some professional qualities that should be developed, including the ability to communicate clearly, the ability to work as part of a team, priority setting, and the ability to lead others and delegate appropriately. Simulation training provides an ideal opportunity to teach and reinforce these crisis resource management qualities, as well as refresh management protocols and technical skills. The recent introduction into the simulation market of a 9-month-old toddler simulator has provided an additional tool for training in the management of pediatric emergencies. The Pediatric Emergencies Anaesthesia Training in the Simulator course has been well received. Initial feedback suggests that confidence in the management of the pediatric emergencies covered by the course is improved. The course can easily include any specialty where management of pediatric emergencies is required and it is also possible to use this course for multidisciplinary training. Evaluation of this course is ongoing, and the questionnaire is regularly reviewed and modified as necessary.
