Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the ileal loop fluid accumulation test for diarrheal toxins. Many different organisms are identified with the production of diarrhea in humans with new ones continually being associated with this illness. The major test that is being used in the study of diarrhea-associated organisms is the ileal loop fluid accumulation test. It is obvious from the information presented in the chapter that the rabbit ileal loop fluid accumulation method has been widely used and is still being used today in those cases where alternate procedures are not available. Also, identification of organisms with diarrheal diseases is on-going and the ileal loop method is the one of choice for initial investigation of the involvement of the organisms in the disease. In spite of the difficulties, the ileal loop method has proved to be an invaluable tool in the investigation of the diarrheal diseases; without it, progress in resolving them would have been very difficult.
