Abstract

AbstractIt is well known that backlights for Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) based on Red, Green and Blue Light Emitting Diodes (RGB LEDs) render superior color quality but do require control of white point over temperature and lifetime [3], [4], [5]. We have developed a novel backlighting system utilizing RGB LED lightsources, a color sensor and a feedback controller. The main result of using optical feedback is a color stability Δ u'v' < 0.002 (CIE1976) over temperature. Optionally, brightness can be maintained constant. The system can control any color point or brightness required.
