Abstract

Fatal and non-fatal opioid poisonings (overdoses) have increased as opioid prescriptions and doses have increased. To reduce opioid poisonings, the Washington (WA) State Interagency Guideline on Opioid Dosing for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain was released in March 2007. These opioid guidelines focus on doses above 120 mg/day morphine equivalent dose (MED) in patients on chronic opioid therapy. However, if opioid poisonings occur in individuals who do not have high prescribed doses and who are not chronic opioid users, guidelines may need revision.
