Abstract

Acne is a known side effect for transgender patients receiving testosterone for gender affirmation. Clinical practice guidelines and policy statements for transgender patients exist to provide evidence-based recommendations. There is a knowledge gap regarding optimal treatment of acne in transgender patients receiving masculinizing hormone therapy. We conducted a narrative review of guidelines for the management of transgender patients. Clinical practice guidelines for hormone therapy in transgender patients that were published in English were identified using Google, UpToDate, and PubMed with the search terms “transgender” and “acne” and “guidelines” or “hormones” or “testosterone.” Of 12 guidelines reviewed, 7 mentioned acne as a potential adverse effect from testosterone therapy.
