Abstract

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a serum test which has been shown to aid in the diagnosis of acute decompensated congestive heart failure (CHF). Laboratory reporting of serum BNP levels is often delayed and can impede rapid diagnosis and timely management. Previous research has suggested that interstitial lung fluid can reliably be detected by chest ultrasound. The presence of fluid within the interlobular septa produces the comet tail artifact, which may indicate pulmonary edema.
