Abstract

White light endoscopy (WLE) may miss intestinal metaplasia (IM), dysplasia and early gastric cancer as these lesions present as subtle mucosal changes. Narrow band imaging (NBI) during endoscopy improves mucosal surface contrast and facilitates visualization of mucosal details. The current NBI system is limited by a dark endoscopic view and is used for characterization of lesions detected by WLE rather than to increase detection rate. The new EXERA III NBI system (Olympus, Tokyo, Japan) with bright illumination and high definition resolution may increase the rate of detection of focal gastric lesions.
