Abstract

Fracture toughness K_<IC> and shadow optical constant c_0 of ceramic materials and glass plates are measured from room temperature to 93K by using the experimental apparatus of cooling furnace combined with the method of caustics. We tried to measure the value of c_0 of ceramics by strain gauge technique. The results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) There is not so large variation in the value of c_0 of ceramics and glass plates within the test temperature. (2) The data of c_0 by strain gauge agree with those by caustics except that of alumina. (3) Fracture toughness value K_<IC> of alumina, PSZ and glass plates become large under low temperature.
