Abstract
Radical reactions, once regarded as more of a curiosity than a useful tool, have become an important class of transformations. Many radical processes exhibit high functional group tolerance, good stereo- and regioselectivity, and the ability to be used in cascade reactions. Recent improvements in radical processes are numerous and include the development of tin-free protocols and enantionselective cyclizations. The primary focus of this chapter is on radical cyclizations and sequential radical reactions. Topics covered include tin-free cyclizations, cyclizations involving heteroatom-based radicals or acceptors, and processes that form unusual-sized rings. Examples of enantioselective cyclizations and sequential radical processes are also presented. Finally, radical cyclizations used in total synthesis are discussed.
