Abstract

For pt.II see ibid., p.338-44 (1991). The conceptual design of a 22 MWh superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system engineering test model (ETM) has been developed. The objectives of the ETM are to demonstrate the feasibility of using a SMES system to perform load leveling and system stabilization for commercial utilities and to supply 400 MW power pulses for ground-based defense systems. A description of the SMES system operation in the charging and discharging modes is given. The results of digital simulations of the SMES-ETM to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed power conditioning system and to explore its overall behavior under normal and fault conditions are presented. >
