Abstract

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently experience sleep problems. The most prominent sleep problem is insomnia, with difficulty falling asleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, and early morning awakenings. Insomnia is one of the most common reasons why parents seek medical intervention in children with ASD, and may exacerbate daytime symptoms, as well as contribute to parental stress. The objective of this presentation is to educate the attendees about the insomnia often experienced by youth with ASD and the subsequent impact on daytime functioning. Potential etiologies of the insomnia will be discussed as well as treatments.
