Abstract
An essential responsibility for aviation security professionals is to understand and have a current working knowledge related to the functions of government in aviation security. This chapter introduces various roles and interactions that federal, state, and local government agencies have with airport security practitioners and other aviation-related law enforcement agencies. Readers will gain essential knowledge regarding the security functions of the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the development and implementation of transportation security regulations and other relevant forms of legislation. Students will gain an understanding of how government policy and regulations in aviation security affect the job responsibilities of various airport security personnel. Some security regulations are addressed in this chapter, while others relating directly to airport, aircraft operator, and air cargo security, are addressed in their own chapters.
