Abstract
This chapter reconstructs the author's portrayal of the character of Jesus in the book of Hebrews. This reconstruction is arranged according to the encomiastic topics that the author does use to construct the character of Jesus. In the catena of Scripture quotations, the author reinforces his assertion about Jesus' divinity. The quotations are used to develop a synkrisis between Jesus and the angels. Along with Jesus' divine nature, the human nature of Jesus is underscored. The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus was made for a little while lower than the angels. The author of Hebrews does something similar by attributing to Jesus a variety of titles which are indicative of the many important offices or roles that Jesus played. The chapter considers each one of these titles in turn, and reflects on how they reveal the character of Jesus.Keywords: book of Hebrews; Jesus; Scripture quotations; synkrisis
