Abstract
‘Looking Ahead’ considers the rise of religious diversity in America, the rise of the information society, and the rise of consumer culture. Religious diversity in America is both quantitatively and qualitatively greater than anywhere else. This is largely due to a shift in sources of immigration to America from Europe to other parts of the world. The rising information society empowers people and groups to form their own, networked social identities, including religious identities. However, it can also lead to individual isolation, social fragmentation and fear of ‘the other’. Meanwhile the rise of consumer culture has stimulated a consumer mentality with regard to religious identity, mixing elements from different traditions.
