Abstract

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community is a diverse group of people in the older adult cohort. To best care for this community, it is important to understand the distinct needs and experiences of this growing population in the healthcare setting. As of 2018, there were over 3 million LGBT older adults in the United States and this number is expected to double within the next 25 years. Although LGBT people in the past have been invisible to both society and to the medical community, it is our job as healthcare providers to create a safe space for these older adults to be visible, express their needs, and have their specific needs treated effectively. Specific care considerations for older geriatric adults includes involvement in families of choice instead of families of origin, social isolation as their families of choice dwindle in size, and minority stress across a lifetime.
