Abstract

An optical PSK modulation scheme (DM-PSK) in which current is directly injected into a laser diode having a wide and flat FM response is proposed. The results of a 4 Gbit/s optical DM-PSK transmission experiment through 233 km of conventional 1.3 μm zero-dispersion fibre at 1.55 μm show a receiver sensitivity of −42.3dBm (BER of 10−9) and a tolerable chromatic dispersion twice that of CP-FSK under similar conditions.
