Abstract

Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) have attracted industrial interest in recent years. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are the ideal choice as filler for both structural and functional applications because CNTs can produce a dramatic improvement in properties of polymers at very low filler loading. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the recent studies related to different methods of fabrication of CNT-reinforced PNCs, such as solution mixing, melt blending, and in situ polymerization. Some new methods, such as layer-by-layer and bucky paper routes are also discussed to provide new insight into fabrication of polymer nanocomposites. Electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties of CNT-reinforced PNCs are also discussed briefly. The potential applications of these nanocomposites are also addressed in short in an attempt to facilitate the progress in this emerging area. The challenges and future research directions for achieving high-performance CNT/PNCs are also emphasized.
