Abstract

Domestic violence within lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2S+) communities is a serious problem that continues to be poorly understood. This chapter summarizes the literature on domestic violence and homicide within LGBTQ2S+ communities, including rates of domestic violence and homicide compared to heterosexual and cisgender populations, the unique dynamics and causes of domestic violence within LGBTQ2S+ communities, and the contexts within which this violence occurs. Three cases of domestic homicide involving LGBTQ2S+ individuals are reviewed, discussing major themes and recommendations with a view to preventing domestic homicides within LGBTQ2S+ communities. The chapter concludes with recommendations for future research, legislation and policy, and practice.
