Abstract

One of the main problems that archival institutions have to deal with is the efficient management of the digital archival material in order to ensure its long-term digital preservation. Nowadays, a growing number of archival materials is digitized and/or is digitally produced. So, how can archivists ensure future access to this material, especially when software and hardware obsolescence are having a direct effect on its management? In this context, this section presents the digital preservation problem by analyzing its roots, the reasons for taking action, and the challenges that the archival institutions are facing. Besides, the main preservation strategies are presented as well as the most well-known conceptual models and metadata used to encode the important documentation needed for digital preservation, such as provenance information.
