Abstract

This chapter reviews relevant literature on the quality of life of the frail elderly, with particular attention to the types of nonmedical interventions or modifications that may affect the interest or well-being of the individual and ultimately, his or her quality of life. It focuses on developing a definition of quality of life integrating psychological, social, spiritual, and environmental dimensions. The chapter discusses interventions that attempt to bring about improvement in or maintenance of an individual's quality of life. It highlights recommendations for the future study of relevant topics and issues that are related to quality of life in the frail elderly. A consensus on a definition of quality of life precedes any coordinated effort to systematically define and classify interventions that will affect the quality of life. Quality of life definitions differ according to perspectives but within each definition lies a thread of commonality. Themes of privacy, control and independence emerge as detractors from the traditional medical model of quality of life.
