Abstract
This chapter reviews the progress on synergistic damage mechanics (SDM) modeling of progressive failure in composite laminates. The major concepts underlying continuum damage mechanics are briefly summarized. Motivated by limitation of this approach, a combined microdamage and continuum damage mechanics is developed and applied for multiple ply cracking damage modes in multidirectional laminates. Validation with experimental data suggests potential of this model for practical composite structural analysis. Recent developments, such as nonlinear SDM model and results from Worldwide Failure Exercise III, are also summarized.
