Abstract

Although 6-benzoyl-2(3H)-benzothiazolone derivatives are known, their 4-benzoyl analogues have not been described previously. The title compound [2-(2-oxo-3H-1,3-benzothiazol-4-oyl)benzoic acid, C 15 H 9 NO 4 S] is the first of this series to be isolated and is characterized here. It was obtained in low yield in a one-step reaction from 3H-benzothiazolone and phthalic anhydride (in the presence of aluminium chloride and dimethylformamide). The X-ray structure determination shows that there is no intramolecular hydrogen bonding, but there is a strong intermolecular hydrogen bond between neighbouring carboxyl groups. The dihedral angle between the 3H-benzothiazolone and benzoyl rings is 69.7 (4)°.
